Jumping into the Ring – 2014 RPGG PbF Initiative

Introducing new gamers to the hobby we love is part of the fun of having a hobby in the first place, isn’t it? We are just as eager to introduce interested people to our hobby as say billiards players. To that end I have recently been contemplating taking part in an RPG initiative over RPG Geek, RPG Geek Play by Forum Initiative – 2014 Edition. This is the third year this site has gathered game masters from all over the world to run Play by Forum RPG games, the catch is, the games will only be open to new Play by Forum players.

What’s a new Play by Forum player? It can be anyone on the site that is new to RPGs or a veteran RPG player who is new to the Play by Forum format for playing games. The format in it’s simplest form is, using threaded discussion forums to create a roleplaying environment whereby all players can interact with the each other through a written medium. This format will not be everyone; games tend to run considerably slower than face to face or live VoIP games. The advantages to this format is the slower pace and ability to access games you may not otherwise be able to access in any other format. I have been mulling over some ideas and I am thinking of participating this year as a GM.

I am consider running one of three different RPG systems, but I have not settled on anything yet. The following are what I am considering:

  • Dungeon Crawl Classics RPG – Portal Under the Stars scenario.
  • Pendragon RPG – Not sure what to run. I am just getting back into this system.
  • Labyrinth Lord RPG – I have a plethora of option for this system.

If you are interested in participating, beginning on 1 March you can sign up for one of the many games that are being offered. Check out this Geek List for a growing list of games on offer — 2014 RPG Geek Newbie-Friendly Play-by-Forum Initiative! Hope to meet some of you on the forums.
