There are two roleplaying games that I am very passionate about. The first is Call of Cthulhu, and to be honest, this is a relatively new gaming passion for me. The second game is King Arthur Pendragon (KAP). My love of KAP goes back some twenty years to my early military days. This was a game that my friends and I spent countless hours playing. Hell, we still talk about those game session to this day from time to time.
Fast forward twenty or so years and my love for the game is still just as strong. Sadly, I rarely get to play it anymore, but that is all about to change. I have set a lofty, yet reasonably attainable goal for 2017 to run a KAP campaign. Why talk about this now in 2016? Easy! The latest version of the game rules just released. <doing my happy dance>
Yesterday, 16 December, I received a notice that my DriveThruRPG library was updated to reflect that KAP version 5.2 was available for me to download. If you have previously purchased KAP 5.1 through DTRPG, check your library!
I just spent the last 30 minutes flipping through the PDF and I am blown away by the art they chose to use in this version. It is stunning in every regard! The artist, Jaime García Mendoza, is an amazingly talented artist. Each chapter’s title page features full-color stained glass-like art piece that is inspired by Arthurian legend and infused with medieval iconography. The accent art used throughout the book is equally as beautiful as the chapter art. Every bit of it is thematically appropriate and enhances the text without detracting from it in any way. Top notch layout as it pertains to art selection, placement and thematic feel of the book.
Currently, this book is not available to the public as it is still being made available to some Kickstarter backers (various Nocturnal projects) and previous owners of KAP 5.1 who get the new version for free. I would like to think that it will be available through DTRPG by the first of the year or sooner to the general public; purely speculation on my part. If you like Arthurian legends you owe it to yourself to get this book and see what KAP is all about.
Look for a review of this RPG in the near future. Additionally, I will likely run my KAP campaign online and will be looking for folks to play. So, if you’re interested in learning more about KAP or playing in the campaign, Follow me on G+ or on Twitter.
